This TV card works great and the remote control that comes with it is very easy to use. I have basic cable and running the coaxial from a splitter direct to the card with no cable box. You can program and record TV programs just by clicking on TV guide time slot. It's so easy and the reception is like watching Youtube videos. Not bad for under $100.
The only problem I had was getting the remote control cable inserted into my computer. At first I thought it was all the way pushed in and my remote control did not work. Somehow the alignment of the input is close to the metal on the computer case and touches it which makes the remote control cable seems to be properly inserted, but actually needs to be pushed in further. I had to kind of push the cable into the input in an angle to get it to click right in due to the mini plug not being inserted all the way in. After that I got it to work fine and with no problems at all. I would rate this card as an excellent product and comes in handy when the family takes over the other 2 TV's I have in the house.
I am running Windows Vista and it works fine with both the supplies WinTV software and Windows Media Player which I use more often to watch and record TV shows. You can also instantly delete the TV show once you are finished watching them to save on computer memory space. I'll give it 5 Stars out of 5 for price, ease of use and convenient use of the remote control. Our old Replay TV (Lifetime membership) is still working strong.
The only problem with Replay TV is that it won't take a digital Qam signal (or any digital cable/OTA signal). Our goal when buying this card was to timeshift the HD locals. We tried intensively for four days using the enclosed software, BeyondTV and then SageTV. Although we are computer literate, we could not get this card or the programs to work correctly on XP Pro with AMD 64 x 2 5000 chip. The video card we have installed is also heavy duty. My little Vizio TV received Qam with no effort and takes 2 minutes to scan. But this card, ugh.took 60 minutes to scan for analog and Qam.
We did have the cable split. We did everything right. But it constantly froze or was unable to map correctly. After a point we looked at ourselves and said.'
All this work just to timeshift the locals on HD?' Better to watch the shows on the internet. They are there 24/7 and its free.
Tivo is also out of the running since it won't take Qam and map it correctly either. I have to say that the engineering is just not there yet for what we wanted.
Maybe in a year or two when the demand is there, Hauppauge will develop a better product. I wish Replay TV was still there and I would upgrade to a digital Replay TV in a heartbeat.

This is a great TV card. I especially wanted to have one compatible with Windows Vista. And it supports digital tv signals. You just need to have a good antenna.
Software is great too. It includes DVR type software so you can record TV shows and watch them later on. I also installed free software from Playon. This software allows me to stream the programs to my living room TV.
Wintv Hvr 1600 Drivers For Mac Pro
I control the viewing using my Roku. It's a simple and efficient set up. I can also view my entire media library using the Roku. The card plugs into the older PCI slots.
Not the new ones. I bought this card to use with my Vista Home Premium (Media Center) PC. I wanted to be able to record and watch over-the-air HDTV programs and pretty much use the PC in the home office as a TV. It works very well.
I installed the card and let Vista find the driver automatically on the included CD from Hauppauge. The drivers installed well. I hooked up an inexpensive HDTV antenna to the ATSC digital tuner input on the card and was up and running with awesome quality HDTV and Digital TV in Vista Media center within a few minutes (after the Vista Media Center setup).
At first, I did not install any of the software on the CD at all (except the driver which Vista found). Worked great just using the keyboard of the PC. Next I wanted to use the remote, so I installed just those tools from the Hauppauge set-up CD. Again, worked great with no messing around. This is where I found one very small issue that I guess has caused me to go 4 stars instead of the 5 it probably deserves. The dumb cord for the remote control receiver is way too short. It does not reach from the back of the PC (sitting on the floor) to the monitor (sitting on the top of the desk) - a configuration I assume is very common.
I have to mount the IR receiver on the front of the PC but most people want to point the remote at the image on the screen, so it doesn't work that well. Would have been SO much nicer if I could have put the IR receiver on the monitor. Small gripe, yes. But one of those annoying little things. But, don't let that stop you from buying it.
UPDATE 10/19/07 - If you plan to use a set-top box with this tuner (say for DirectTV or something like that), you will need to buy the Microsoft Media Center remote control. The IR receiver in this unit does not work for Media Center. The remote works, but Vista does not see the hardware for the purposes of DVR from a Set Top Box.
Quite frustrating and another forty bucks. Getting the Tuner to work was as easy as pointing driver installation to the drivers folder on the included winTV disc.
After Installing three different remote apps on the disc, along with a vista mce patch, the remote now works perfect with Vista's MCE. The picture looks great, and the remote is pretty good. I now need a bunch of HD Space though due to my recordings with MCE. Which is only 90 hours with my 400 Gigs. I love the quality of this sound card, it is great. But of course there is no documentation.
The only down side. On vista, click cancel on the prompts.
Open the cd manually and run setup. It should run the Vista Installer automatically. If something goes wrong, just do what i did and click every remote app till your remote works! Also, The silver IR Receiver works with the remote. The other one is for changing channels on your cable box when using the s-video in.(again, no documentation) I would definitely buy again (I might buy one more for dual HD tuners in MCE if they support it). I had a Gateway PC with Windows Media Center 2005 installed, and upgraded to Vista Ultimate as soon as it came out.
Naturally, I experienced the compatibility problems many other Vista upgraders experienced, and one of the casualties was my OEM TV tuner card, which either burned out or didn't have the proper driver support. I bought this card hoping it would fix the problem, and so far it HAS with flying colors! I just popped the PCI card into the slot my old TV tuner card occupied, powered up and Vista automatically searched the web for the proper drivers.
I didn't even have to run any installation software! Because I didn't install any of the Hauppauge software, I can't comment on their WinTV2000 application. I also can't tell you about their included remote, or the HDTV antenna input I don't use, but I can tell you one thing.
This card works wonderfully to get an analog cable signal for Windows Vista Ultimate, and all of the functionality you'd expect from Windows Media Center (including the ability to change the channel using your existing Windows remote instead of the Hauppauge one) works great! Pros: fast channel switching. Is a dual tuner. Has a remote, that is Vista media center compatible. Driver support from Windows update.
Is QAM HD compatible which I haven't tested but is supposed to work with many HD cable signals. Cons: remote is IR (haven't tested the IR blaster feature) so you have to place it somewhere via velcro, prefer RF.
IR driver fails after the system returns from standby and gives a popup error, this should be fixed in Vista. Other notes: I had just read the developer brief on becoming Vista Premium / XP MCE hardware certified and that hardware should have their drivers available via Windows updates, so I decided to put it to the test.
I loaded nothing from the Hauppauge cd and it found and setup everything in Media Center except for the remote, which I had to download the current IR program from their website. I am not using their PVR software BTW. Also works well in Snapstream's Beyond TV 4.6. I installed the Hauppauge 1178 WinTV-HVR-1600 Internal Hybrid TV Tuner/Video Recorder in my Windows 64 bit Vista machine and it only works PART OF THE TIME. It works fine at times, but other times the signal is broken up and lots of pieces come up missing. I've tried EVERYTHING TO FIX the problem only to wind up in defeat. I wish I had gone another route.
In all fairness, the company did offer to refund my money (or exchange it whatever) but I kept it and tried some more tricks, only to wind up again with the same mess from time to time. Oh well, live and learn. Works great WHEN IT WORKS. I'm setting up a PVR to gradually take the place of my multi-VCR system, and to be able to record some of the broadcast digital HD channels.
The 1600 lives in the same system with a Hauppauge 950Q, on a WinXP dual-core system. WinTV 6 has trouble tuning the digital stations and won't handle multiple tuners (i.e. The 1600 + the 950Q). Hauppauge has a newer version of WinTV that is supposed to handle multiple tuners. Though it recognized both tuners, it wouldn't let me do anything useful with them and was overall pretty buggy. Since I was intending to use the setup with Sage Media Center, the WinTV software was just for testing anyway, so that was OK (though more usable software would have helped.) The tuner on the 1600 seemed somewhat less sensitive than the tuner on the 950Q, which makes a difference, since only one station brodcasts loally, while all the others are about 30 miles away.
I have an attic antenna, not a large rooftop one. You have to be careful about the antenna-orientation or you get unwatchable video, but if it's set up right, the HD video is beautiful. The analog cable tuner works fine, and I can record 3 shows at once with the 1600+950Q combination. Since I sometimes need to record 4 shows at once, I may buy an additional 1600. There are a few other dual-tuner products, but this was the only one that was a PCI interface.
Others are PCI-express, which I don't have. As the other reviewers have said, this product has good to great hardware and very poor software. The tuner is very good, especially for HDTV, but the recorder software fair for analog TV only and it is useless for HDTV. The two are just not matched up to work together. The recorder software is a stripped out trial version of Corel's 'Ulead MovieFactory 5'.
A free trial version of 'Ulead MovieFactory 6' is still available on the. website. The selection of pci tuner cards is limited.
I had been using an older TV tuner card and old DVR software in my pc to record favorite TV shows and movies, edit out the commercials, and burn to dvd. I purchased this new tuner to upgrade to HDTV, but it's not capable of doing the same off broadcast HDTV. I'm better-off using my old setup on analog cable tv.
